As our congregation, Ascension, has voluntarily agreed to be united in faith, teaching and life, we use a Greek word as part of our national identity.
We are part of the Christian Church, of the Lutheran tradition, known as the the Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod. The reason I say this is while I was checking out news from former congregations, I came across the same word being used by another denomination. And the pastor introducing it said it like this:
"“Synod” is not a familiar word for most [members in our denomination]. It’s a Greek word, basically meaning to “walk with,” or "journey together." Throughout our history, it’s been used to refer to gatherings of the Church to “walk with” one another and with the Holy Spirit, to read “the signs of the times” and discern in a spirit of prayer how the Church is being called to respond."
I am so glad that another Christian denomination is using this term as we have understood it for 175 years. We walk together, guided by the Holy Spirit, so that our mission of evangelizing the nations continues unabated. I look forward to the day when Christendom is united under one banner, but that will be in a new heaven and earth, where there are no divisions.
Galatians 5:16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
